LAUSD is seeking substitute teachers who will ensure the continuation of the instructional program in the absence of the regular teacher. Please click here to apply.

The Certificated Substitute Unit functions as the primary source for all certificated substitute teacher assignment activity. This site provides current substitute teachers, regular classroom teachers and school administrators information related to the requesting and assigning of day-to-day substitute teachers.  Please take this opportunity to familiarize yourself with its many resources, particularly those embedded in the Substitute Teacher Handbook.

Child Abuse Training: All LAUSD employees are required to take the Child Abuse Training. In order to ensure the safety of our students, it is critical that all District employees clearly understand their responsibility as Mandated Reporters of child abuse. Cut-Off Dates: Days worked, reported and approved after the payroll cut-off date will not be paid on the scheduled pay dates.

Payroll Calendar: Click here to access the 2012-13 payroll calendars.

Anticipated Time: Because anticipated time cannot be reported for substitute teachers, approved time worked at the end of each month will be paid on the next pay date for the following month or the next off-cycle pay date scheduled.

BTS Time Statements: Your time statement is available online. Please click here to go to the BTS homepage to view and track the processing status of time entries entered by site-based time reporting staff. To instructions on how to use the Employee Time Statement, please click here.

Active LAUSD Email Account Mandatory: You will need an active LAUSD E-Mail account to do any of the following:

  • Access your BTS time statement
  • Complete annual reasonable assurance and availability renewal

Sub Application

At this time, candidates applying as substitute teachers must meet current district qualifications for employment.

For certificated candidates, this includes:

  • A valid state issued teaching credential; i.e. preliminary or professional clear multiple subject or single subject teaching credential, or Education Specialist Level I or Level II
  • No Child Left Behind (NCLB)/Highly qualified compliant in NCLB core academic subject
  • English Learner Authorization (see http://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/leaflets/cl622.pdf for details)
  • A minimum of three Reference forms (HR 1633 or HR 1632) from the supervisors of all employment within the last three years and / or the final student teaching evaluation completed within the last three years
  • A successful interview conducted by the Certificated Recruitment and Selection staff
  • A writing sample
  • An effective lesson demonstration
  • Fingerprint and health clearance
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.
For non-credentialed substitute candidates, the candidates will need to meet the following qualifications. This includes:
  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) with a 2.7 GPA
  • Successful completion of the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST)
  • A minimum of three Reference forms (HR 1633 or HR 1632) from the supervisors of all employment within the last three years
  • A successful interview conducted by the Certificated Recruitment and Selection staff
  • Fingerprint and health clearance.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.
  • All non-teaching credentialed candidates will have a mandatory unpaid pre-service training requirement of sixteen (16) hours.

Retired LAUSD teachers may apply to become Limited Substitutes in accordance with current CalSTRS regulations and meet the District qualifications for non-credentialed candidates above.
