The Certificated Substitute Unit functions as the primary source for all certificated substitute teacher assignment activity. This site provides current substitute teachers, regular classroom teachers and school administrators information related to the requesting and assigning of day-to-day substitute teachers.  Please take this opportunity to familiarize yourself with its many resources, particularly those embedded in the Substitute Teacher Handbook.

Ideas for Substitute Appreciation Day:

  • Present each substitute educator with a carnation and a note or poem of thanks and appreciation.

  • Have staff or students bring a bag of snacks into the classroom. Substitute teachers often stay in the classroom, using breaks and lunchtime to prepare for the next part of the day.

  • Arrange for a school wide recognition of substitute educators in the read-aloud school bulletin or on the intercom announcements.

  • Create and present substitute educators with a certificate of appreciation.

  • Showcase digital photos of the "Substitute Educators of the Week" on a central bulletin board or banner.

  • Distribute a media alert and press release about your substitute educators event.

Payroll

Cut-Off Dates: Days worked, reported and approved after the payroll cut-off date will not be paid on the scheduled pay dates.

Anticipated Time: Because anticipated time cannot be reported for substitute teachers, approved time worked at the end of each month will be paid on the next pay date for the following month or the next off-cycle pay date scheduled.

Sub Application

Although we are accepting applications for prospective substitute teachers, we are not currently interviewing for this position.

Candidates applying as substitutes must meet the qualifications and district standards for full-time certificated / licensed employment. This includes:

  • A state issued teaching license.
  • Completion of a teacher preparation program, including student teaching.
  • Strong letters of reference from the Principal(s) of the last three years of teaching experience and / or the final student teaching evaluation completed within the last year.
  • A successful interview conducted by the Certificated Recruitment and Selection staff.
  • Fingerprint and health clearance.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.

When and if the district determines that it is able to consider non-credentialed substitute candidates, the candidates will need to meet the following qualifications. This includes:

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) with a 3.0 GPA.
  • Successful completion of the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST).
  • Strong letters of reference from the last three years of work experience.
  • A successful interview conducted by the Certificated Recruitment and Selection staff.
  • Fingerprint and health clearance.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.
  • All non-credentialed candidates will have a mandatory pre-service training requirement of forty (40) hours.
