Incentives and Resources for Teachers

National Board Certification
A system to assess and certify teachers who meet high, rigorous standards developed by the National Board for Teaching Standards. Participation is voluntary and the system does not replace existing state licensing.

This site is devoted to helping California teachers and school, district, county, and university support providers access information about programs that support teachers' National Board Certification candidacy.

Loan Programs

The Assumption Program of Loans for Education (APLE) was established in 1983 to provide loan assumption benefits to credentialed teachers. Visit the California Student Aid Commission website for the APLE Loan Program and other aid available for teachers.

Income-Based Repayment (IBR) is a new payment option for federal student loans. It can help borrowers keep their loan payments affordable with payment caps based on their income and family size. For most eligible borrowers, IBR loan payments will be less than 10 percent of their income - and even smaller for borrowers with low earnings. IBR will also forgive remaining debt, if any, after 25 years of qualifying payments.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness is a new program for federal student loan borrowers who work in certain kinds of jobs. It will forgive remaining debt after 10 years of eligible employment and qualifying loan payments. (During those 10 years, the Income-Based Repayment (IBR) plan can help keep your loan payments affordable.)

If you're a teacher serving in a low-income or subject-matter shortage area, it might be possible for you to cancel or defer your student loans.

The Troops to Teachers program provides financial benefits up to $10,000 to eligible military veterans hired to teach in K-12 classrooms.
