Dear Substitute Teacher Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in employment with the Los Angeles Unified School District. We value all of our interested applicants and hope to provide you with the best customer service possible.

We accept applications for substitute teacher positions throughout the year. Although we are accepting applications for prospective substitute teachers, we are not currently interviewing for this position.

Candidates applying as substitutes must meet the qualifications and district standards for full-time certificated / licensed employment. This includes:

  • A state issued teaching license.
  • Completion of a teacher preparation program, including student teaching.
  • Strong letters of reference from the Principal(s) of the last three years of teaching experience and / or the final student teaching evaluation completed within the last year.
  • A successful interview conducted by the Certificated Recruitment and Selection staff.
  • Fingerprint and health clearance.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.

When and if the district determines that it is able to consider non-credentialed substitute candidates, the candidates will need to meet the following qualifications. This includes:

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) with a 3.0 GPA.
  • Successful completion of the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST).
  • Strong letters of reference from the last three years of work experience.
  • A successful interview conducted by the Certificated Recruitment and Selection staff.
  • Fingerprint and health clearance.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.
  • All non-credentialed candidates will have a mandatory pre-service training requirement of forty (40) hours.

Applications are reviewed in the order they are received and according to the current needs of the District. After application review, candidates may receive an e-mail requesting additional documents, as needed. Therefore, the application process requires that all applicants have an active e-mail address.

On behalf of the Los Angeles Unified School District, we would like to wish all of our teacher candidates the best of luck with the application process.

  Sincerely,
  Certificated Recruitment and Selection
