IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: The Master Plan Teacher Training Program closed June 30, 2008. To assist teachers in acquiring appropriate certification to instruct EL students, please see the following helpful information.
CLAD Certification may
be obtained by one of the following:
- Coursework (cost approximately $2,500)
- Examination (cost between $300 and $550)
Coursework and examination for
the California Teacher of English Learners (CTEL) may now be combined
if the university attended chooses to accept the examination as
comparable to the coursework that is offered by their university.

LAUSD teachers who chose the
route of examination may be eligible for a voucher for the examination
which will cover the costs of the examination. To meet eligibility
requirements, teachers must complete all required hours and provide
proof of completion prior to the regular examination deadline.

The California Teacher of
English Learners (CTEL) examination will be administered the
following dates dates for the 2011-2012 school year:
- November 15-23, 2011
- August 17-24, 2012
Advance registration for the examination is required. The examination is administered by a private testing company that is separate from both the district and the California Commission Teacher Credentialing. The District is unable to assist with registration. For more information, please visit the National Education Systems (NES) website at http://www.ctel.nesinc.com/. To qualify for a CLAD certificate through testing, a participant must pass CTEL 1, 2, and 3 and register the passing of all three tests with LAUSD and the CTC.
For dates for the California Subject Examination for Teachers: Languages Other Than English (CSET- LOTE) examination and for further information for the CSET- LOTE, please visit the CSET website at www.cset.nesinc.com. To qualify for a BCLAD certificate through testing, a participant must possess a CLAD certificate and pass CSET- LOTE tests 3, 4, and 5 and register the passing of all three tests with LAUSD and the CTC. The Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) continues to offer AB2913 classes (CCSD (SB1292) for teachers with vocational and special subject designated subjects teaching credentials or holders of service credentials with a special class authorization (ROP & ROTC teachers).
