What is ED TRP?
ED TRP (called “Ed Trip”) is an Early Deciders Teacher Recruitment Program grant funded by the U. S. Department of Education. The goal of the grant is to recruit and train highly qualified teachers in the areas of special education and science. ED TRP simply offers students a chance to experience teaching and makes them aware of options and opportunities they might not otherwise have known about.
What does this have to do with high school students?
The LAUSD Career Ladder has shown that individuals who make an early decision to become teachers are better prepared and stay with the profession longer than those who do not. This makes Teacher Career Academy (TCA) graduates excellent teacher candidates and the district wants to encourage you to enter the profession and work for LAUSD.
Why Science and Special Education?
Currently, there is a nationwide shortage of special education and secondary science teachers. These teachers are all but guaranteed a job. Special education teachers may teach any grade level, disability, or subject. Secondary science teachers work in middle schools or high schools. While there are positions in other secondary subject areas and in elementary education, individuals pursuing those areas will find them more competitive.
What is an Early Experience?
Early Experiences (EE) have been designed to expose students to what teaching in specific subject areas is like. The goal is to give students an experience in teaching a subject they might not have considered. If students enjoy this experience and want to further explore that teaching field, they can apply for an ED TRP Internship.
What is an ED TRP Internship?
The ED TRP paid Internship is a 4 week summer or off-track program where high school students are hired as student aides to work in a classroom assisting the teacher. Students receive instruction in teaching theory for a subject area they choose. As a student aide, they work in classrooms of those same subjects to assist the teacher and observe the teaching theories discussed in class.
What comes next?
Students who decide to become teachers can apply for the In-House Teacher Recruitment Program (ITRP) Scholarship in eleventh grade. Graduating seniors may sign an Early Teaching Contract with the District. Teacher Career Academy seniors can sign-up for District testing to become a Teacher’s Assistant (TA), and get help in finding a TA job upon high school graduation. Students who become TAs can receive further assistance from the Career Ladder Office in their pursuit of a Teaching Credential.
