Educational occupational therapy and physical therapy in LAUSD is a rewarding opportunity to provide OT and PT services under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act):

  • Assess students within their educational settings, using an ecological model of assessment to determine their needs.
  • Provide treatment, program consultation, and environmental modifications for students with disabilities to improve student function within the educational environment
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members, including students, parents, teachers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, adapted physical education teachers, orientation and mobility specialists, speech teachers, etc.
  • Travel between schools to provide occupational therapy or physical therapy services to students who have been identified to require OT or PT services.

School-based occupational therapy addresses purposeful, goal-directed activities to improve student function within the educational environment, in the following areas:

  • Postural stability
  • Fine motor skills
  • Visual perception and integration
  • Activities of daily living
  • Motor planning
  • Coordination
  • Sensory processing
  • Self-help activities
  • Social and play abilities
  • Environmental adaptations
  • Use of assistive devices

School-based physical therapy addresses purposeful, goal-directed activities to improve student function within the educational environment, in the following areas:

  • Motor planning
  • Sensorimotor coordination
  • Posture
  • Balance
  • Functional Mobility
  • Activities of daily living
  • Accessibility
  • Environmental adaptations
  • Use of assistive devices

School occupational therapy and physical therapy program benefits for certificated staff:

E-Basis (11-month position)
- Salary $70,468 (first year) to $87,756 (fifth year)
- 210 work days
- 24 paid days
- 11 sick days

B-Basis (10-month position)

- Salary $66,553 (first year) to $82,881 (fifth year)
- 197 work days
- 10 sick days
- Work summer session (4 hour days)

C-Basis (9-month position)
- Salary $61,433 (first year) to $76,505 (fifth year)
- 182 work days
- 22 holidays
- 9 sick days
- Summers off

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS - OT

  • An earned bachelor's or master's degree from an accredited college or university in Occupational Therapy.
  • A certificate from National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
  • A California Occupational Therapy License (or current state license).
  • A driver's license

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS - PT

  • An earned bachelor's or master's degree from an accredited college or university in Physical Therapy.
  • A California Physical Therapy License (or current state license)
  • A driver's license
