Recruitment Begins for 2009-10 School Year
     The Los Angeles Unified School District has officially begun recruitment for District Interns for the 2009-10 academic school year.  Credential programs are available in the following subjects:  Single Subject Mathematics, English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Geoscience and Special Education in Mild to Moderate Disabilities and Moderate to Severe Disabilities, grades K-12.

When to Apply

    The following prerequisites must be met before applying online:

         Posses Bachelor’s degree with a 2.7 GPA
         Pass basic skills test (CBEST)
         Pass subject matter test (CSET) or complete a subject   
         matter waiver
         Meet US Constitution requirement (course or exam)

     It is highly recommended that all applicants make classroom observations in LAUSD schools before applying online.  The District is seeking candidates who are committed to working with the students of Los Angeles.  Also, work or volunteer experience with youth is another important qualification in being approved for the Program.

Meeting the CBEST and CSET Requirement

     All teachers in California are required to pass the California Basic Skills Test (CBEST) which covers reading comprehension, mathematics and writing skills. 
     In addition to the CBEST, all interns are required to pass the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET).  The subject one wishes to teach determines which CSET to take. 

 Mathematics:  Subtests 110, 111, 112
 Mathematics Foundation Level:  Subtests:  110, 111
 Biology:  Subtests:  118, 119, 120
 
Chemistry:  Subtests:  118, 119, 121
 
Physics:  Subtests:  118, 119, 123
 
English:  Subtests:  105, 106, 107, 108
 
Special Education Mild-to-Moderate*:  Subtests:  101, 102, 103
 
Special Education Moderate-to-Severe:  Subtests:  101, 102,  
 103

     *Those who are interested in pursuing a Special Education Credential in Mild-to-Moderate Disabilities and anticipate teaching at the high school level will need to pass the Single Subject CSET in Biology, Chemistry, Geoscience, Physics, Math or English.

LAUSD Offers Tuition-Free Program

     LAUSD offers a tuition-free District Intern credential program for those interested in teaching Mathematics, Science, English and Special Education.  District Interns who particiapte in this Program earn a full salary and benefits while teaching full-time in their own classroom.  General Education Interns earn the preliminary credential in 18 months and attend class one night a week.  After completion of the preliminary, they earn the clear credential in 18 additional months.  Special Education Interns earn the preliminary credential in 2 years by attending class one night a week and one Saturday a month.  After earning the preliminary credential, they earn the clear credential in one additional year.


Opportunities Open in Special Education

     Teachers who hold a valid general education credential in any subject and who want to teach special education may apply to the CENTSE Program, Credentialed Educators Now Teaching Special Education.  It is a 2-year accelerated program to earn a Special Education Credential in Mild to Moderate Disabilities, grades K-12.  While particiapting in CENTSE, the interns attend class one night a week and one Saturday month while working full-time in an LAUSD Special Education classroom.
