Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaragosa visits Ms. Chen and her students for their outstanding achievements. Ms. Chen's Debate Team ranked # 8 in the Global Debate of all USA high schools.

District Intern Graduate Makes a Difference

Jesse Chen is an English teacher at Santee Learning Complex in Downtown Los Angeles. She completed her preliminary credential with the District Intern Program. Jesse shares her enthusiasm and success as a teacher.

"I motivate students by building a personal bond with them and being a good listener. I ask them about their lives and build trust. I believe that I am a successful teacher because I deeply care about my students. If you truly care about your students, you will become inspired to create the best lessons and teaching strategies for your students."

"Also, I always keep high expectations of my students, higher than they want."

Preparing for the Program

Ms. Chen recommends making friends with teachers to learn about the profession. She adds that subsitute teaching or volunteering at a school is another great way to prepare for becoming a teacher. For those with no experience at an LAUSD school, making classroom observations is also highly encouraged.

Ms. Chen adds, "As a new teacher do not expect to change the world, but be realistic and think of what you can do to for one student, for one class and for one day."
