Choosing a Career in Special Education

The opportunities in Special Education are great!  There are a variety of credentials in Special Education.  To decide if this is the career for you, we recommend that you observe special education classrooms in the District.  Watching teachers in action is the best way to learn about the profession.  The District Intern Program offers special education credentials in mild-to-moderate disabilities and moderate-to-severe.  When you observe a teacher, it is best to see both
kinds of classrooms to see which interests you most.

Meeting the Eligibility Requirements

To join the District Intern Program for Special Education, individuals must pass the CBEST, CSET or complete a subject matter waiver, hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college with a 2.7 GPA, meet the U.S. Constitution requirement, and complete a successful interview with a LAUSD Recruitment Specialist.  To apply online, visit

Making the Transition with CENTSE

How LAUSD District Intern
Program Works

District Interns attend class one night a week for four hours and one Saturday a month for eight hours.  Prior to entering the program, a pre-service orientation of 240 hours is required of District Interns to prepare you for the classroom and the procedures and policies of the District.
Pre-service orientation is offered in May-June or July-August and is a great way to begin your career as a teacher.  (CENTSE District Interns attend 160 hours of pre-service orientation since they already hold a general education credential.)
All programs allow you to earn your California Clear Credential in three years, except CENTSE which allows you to earn your California Clear in two years.

General Education Programs Offered

The District Intern Program also has credential programs available in Single Subject Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Geoscience, English and in Multiple Subjects.
Mathematics and  Science teachers continue to be most in demand for LAUSD.  General Education District Interns will need to pass the CBEST, CSET or complete a subject matter waiver, hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college with a 2.7 GPA, meet the U.S. Constitution requirement and complete a successful interview with a LAUSD Recruitment Specialist.  To learn more about these programs, please attend an informational meeting or contact the District Intern Program Office.
